The date of the establishment of the General Directorate of Municipal and Rural Affairs in the Southern Region of the Kingdom dates back to 1/2/1398 AH based on the decision of His Royal Highness the Minister of Municipal and Rural Affairs No. 39/6, and its actual activity began on 2/15/1398 AH after the adoption of the organizational structure of the directorate, which linked the municipalities and village complexes in the regions of Asir, Al-Baha, Jizan and Najran, and on 6/20/1415 AH the name was changed.

27169/400B, and thus the municipalities and village complexes in the regions of Al-Baha, Jizan and Najran were linked directly to the Ministry, and the Directorate became responsible for supervising the municipalities and rural complexes in the Asir Region, which are ten main municipalities and seven village complexes: There are 4,007 villages spread throughout the region that have been linked to the municipalities and village complexes that fall within its scope.
The directorate’s supervision of the work of municipalities and village complexes includes both administrative and technical aspects, and aims to develop, improve and beautify cities and villages, preserve legal lands, and implement the instructions issued in this regard and the subsequent participation in committees, coordination of projects, ensuring the estimation of compensation and properties, and carrying out related work.
The organizational structure of the directorate has been proposed to be compatible with The tasks and responsibilities assigned to it in a way that is consistent with the Ministry’s apparatus on the one hand and with the apparatus of municipalities and village complexes on the other hand.
